Wine in Sarandë
Albania has been making wine for three thousand years, and the local grapes deserve more attention than they get. Our list puts them next to Italian bottles.
Albanian grapes worth trying
Shesh i Bardhë is the white to order with grilled fish — citrus, a little herb, enough body to handle charcoal. Shesh i Zi and Kallmet are the reds: Kallmet is darker and firmer, good with lamb or a slow ragù. Debina from the Përmet side is lighter and fresher.
Ask the staff for a taste before you commit to a bottle; we would rather you enjoy the second glass.
By the glass, and what to pair
Several whites, reds and a rosé are open each day, alongside prosecco and spritz for the aperitivo hour. Whole grilled fish wants a crisp white; seafood pasta takes the same; grilled meats and tavë prefer a red with structure.
Wine is served at proper temperature — whites cold, reds cooled slightly, which matters in a Sarandë summer.
