Butrint, from the Sarandë side.

What to see, when to go, and where to eat afterwards — the way our guests actually do the trip.

Why Butrint is worth the trip

Butrint is one of the Mediterranean's most complete archaeological sites — Greek walls, a Roman theatre, a Byzantine baptistery, and a Venetian tower stacked on a single wooded peninsula between a lagoon and the Ionian. UNESCO protects the whole park, and you can walk the entire loop in about two hours.

How to get to Butrint from Sarandë

Butrint sits 20 km south of Sarandë, past Ksamil. The municipal bus leaves the Sarandë waterfront roughly every hour in summer (30–40 minutes, cheap and reliable). Taxis run about €20 one way, or €40–50 for a round trip with a wait. If you're driving, the SH81 hugs the coast — plan on 35 minutes plus parking at the park entrance.

Tickets, hours & the best time to arrive

The park is open daily from 08:00 to 19:00 in summer and until 16:00 in winter. Entrance is around 1000 ALL (about €10) for adults; the ticket includes the on-site museum inside the Venetian castle. Arrive at opening or after 16:00 to avoid the Corfu day-trip buses that flood the site between 11:00 and 15:00.

Must-see ruins on the loop

Follow the marked one-way trail: the Greek theatre and Roman baths first, then the mosaics of the Baptistery (often covered by sand for preservation — ask a guide), the Basilica, the Lion Gate, and finally the Venetian castle museum on the hill. Bring water, sturdy shoes, and mosquito repellent for the lagoon side.

Pair it with Ksamil

The road back passes Ksamil — the easiest swim stop on the Riviera. If you finish Butrint by early afternoon, spend two hours on one of the small coves before heading north. See our companion piece on the best beaches in Sarandë for exactly which cove to pick.

Dinner back in Sarandë

After a long day among ruins, come back to Krahu i Shqiponjës on the northern end of the Sarandë promenade. Wild-caught Ionian fish, a wine list built on Vlorë and Berat producers, and a terrace that catches the last light over the harbor. Reserve for 20:00 or later — that's when the room settles.
